Kontron, a leading global provider of IoT / Embedded Computing Technology (ECT), is pleased to announce the provision of a new 3.5″ single board computer, named 3.5″-SBC-WLU, powered by 8th Generation Intel® Core™ U-Series and Intel® Celeron® 4000 Series processors (formerly codenamed Whiskey Lake), for integration into low-power low-latency graphics-intensive embedded systems used in retail, banking, hospitality, education, industrial control and automation.
More Powerful To Stream 4K UHD Content
Generally speaking, 3.5″-SBC-WLU, powered by 8th Generation Intel® Core™ U-Series and Intel® Celeron® 4000 Series processors along with the integrated Intel® UHD Graphics 620 / 610, delivers up to 58% better computing performance and up to 50% better graphics performance in comparison with its counterparts based on the previous generation Intel® Core™ U-Series platforms. With two DP++ ports supporting resolution 4096 x 2034 at 60 frames per second, it is capable of delivering ultimate 4K UHD viewing experience to viewers or users with virtually no stuttering, buffering or lags. This is a critical eye-catching factor for customer-oriented applications, such as retail, banking, hospitality and education. In industrial control and automation, 4K imaging can enhance views to the degree of identifying micro-cracks as well. That can advance manufacturing quality or inspection reliability.
Faster And More Connected To Minimize Latency
3.5″-SBC-WLU is equipped with several new-generation interfaces to support higher data transfer rates between main memory, storage media and peripheral devices, including two DDR4 SO-DIMM memory sockets, four USB 3.1 ports and three next-generation M.2 expansion slots with Key B, Key E and Key M physical interface forms respectively.
A feature that distinguishes 3.5″-SBC-WLU from other SBC counterparts is that it is made with M.2 Key E slot compliant with Intel® CNVi Wi-Fi / Bluetooth module. Intel® CNVi (Integrated Connectivity) integrates the core functional elements of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies into the processors. Only the RF-related functions are left via a CNVi-ready M.2 Key E interface to an external companion RF module. Depending on the companion RF module options chosen, 3.5″-SBC-WLU can deliver up to 12 times fester Wi-Fi speeds compared to conventional Wi-Fi expansion scheme, It can help integrators easily and cost-effectively build an IoT-connected computing system.
Additionally, the M.2 Key M slot on the 3.5″-SBC-WLU supports both SATA 3.0 and PCIe 3.0 x4 signals for SSD installation. In case of an PCIe NVMe-based SSD installed, it can reach the theoretical speed of 3.94 GB/s, much faster than the 600 MB/s limit of the SATA 3.0 connection.
Configurable TDP Support To Provide Design and Performance Flexibility
3.5″-SBC-WLU is powered by the processors with relatively low 15 W TDP and supports configurable TDP from 12.5 W to 25 W for the models with Core™ processors. Thus, it provides flexibility to integrators to control system performance based on cooling capability and application scenarios. The lower TDP configuration, typically under 15 W, makes easy the development of a fanless and quiet computing system even sealed within an ingress protection housing for harsh industrial environments or noise-sensitive applications, while the higher configuration makes possible a more powerful system for performance-demanding applications.
Easy To Design Smaller Systems
3.5″-SBC-WLU introduces three new-generation M.2 expansion slots to replace conventional mSATA and mPCIe slots. Besides the faster data rates mentioned above, the smaller form factor of the installed modules can greatly reduce the footprint of a system, especially when integrators abandon a conventional 2.5″ hard drive via the SATA port and install an M.2 SSD in the M.2 Key M or Key B slot.
Hardware-level Cryptographic Support To Make Securer Computers
3.5″-SBC-WLU integrates a hardware-level TPM 2.0 secure cryptographic IC onboard. Integrators can leverage to enhance security features in their systems to manage user authentication, network access and data protection.
More Convenient For Users
3.5″-SBC-WLU is equipped with two DP++ (DisplayPort Dual-Mode) output connectors and can logically output either DP, HDMI or DVI signal from the connector depending on which type of the plug-in cable or cable adapter is detected. Users needn’t prepare an additional active adapter when connecting to a HDMI or DVI monitor.
